the people of Babylon in Iraq, Ibrahim(PBUH) saw all of them worshiping the
idols and asking the guidance from this Idols. Ibrahim(PBUH) also born in a
family whose profession was to make and sell the idols. Ibrahim(PBUH) got
beyond that physical world and saw the spiritual world behind Allah(SWT) took
him many degrees higher.Allah(SWT) showed him spiritual glories behind the
magnificent powers and laws of the physical universe.
Ibrahim Alaihissalam decided to convince the people about the powerless idols. "And by Allah(SWT), I will surely plot against your idols after you have turned back and retired" (21:57).
There was a celebration in the town and all attended including their religious leaders. Ibrahim(PBUH) now took the axe and began to break all the idols except the one which is biggest and he spared for a purpose. When he finished destroying all the idols he left the axe in the neck of the biggest idol(21:58).
On their return from the festival, people come to worship the idol and saw everything is destroyed, everyone shocked, grieved and furious. "Who has done this mischief?" they asked themselves.
They confronted Ibrahim(PBUH), asking "who broke the idols?" Ibrahim(PBUH) calmly replied, "Ask the biggest one". the people replied "Ibrahim(PBUH), don't you know the idols can't speak?"
Ibrahim(PBUH) replied "Why do you worship them? They can't talk, move or understand anything. Why do you ask them for favour?". People had no answer. They were sure that it was Ibrahim(PBUH) who broke the idols. They could not let the matter rest easily. They called a meeting and decided to burn Ibrahim(PBUH) alive. They had to defend their idols.(21:59-68).
A big fire was prepared and Ibrahim(PBUH) was thrown into it but miracle happened. The fire did not burn him. Allah(SWT) protected him since h had done the right thing. People were amazed to see it and they could not believe their eyes. Ibrahim(PBUH) was safe and his persecutors felt sad and helpless(21:69-70).
In this way Ibrahim(PBUH), was given the light of the truth by Allah(SWT). Ibrahim(PBUH) was a messenger and servant of Allah(SWT)(16:120-122;19:41).
He loved Allah(SWT) more than anything else. He was ready to sacrifice His son Ismail(PBUH) on Allah's command. Allah(SWT) accepted Ibrahim(PBUH) readiness and sent a lamb to be sacrificed instead(37:101-107).
We all observe the festival of "Idul Adha" to commemorate this.
Ibrahim(PBUH) who built Al Kabah in Makkah with his son Ismail(PBUH). (22:26-27;2:125-129;14:35-37).
